Guangdong Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences (GIESS)

Guangdong Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences (GIESS) was founded in 1958 by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) initially with the name of Soil Research Centre of Central South China. It is now affiliated to Guangdong Academy of Sciences. GIESS shoulders the responsibilities towards protection and effective utilization of soil resources, soil ecology and soil remediation in Guangdong Province. GIESS has a total staff of 150 at present, including 20 professors and 35 Ph.D. Three of them have been granted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars, the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Excellent Young Scholars, and the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province for Distinguished Young Scholars.

GIESS aims to boost the development of soil science by promoting interdisciplinary collaboration with environmental science and ecology science, to build a talent team with sustainable creativity, to construct a national-level research platform step by step, and finally to be an internationally famous research institute of tropical and subtropical soil science with a development model of integrating forward-looking basic scientific research, key and generic technology innovation and industrial service innovation.

Four research platforms have been built: Guangdong Key Laboratory of Agricultural Environment and Integrated Control, Guangdong Public Laboratory of Environmental Science and Technology, Guangzhou Engineering Center of Soil Remediation Technologies and Equipments, and Guangdong Soil Science Museum.

There are six research centers: Research Center of Soil and Land Resources, Research Center of Pollution Control and Remediation, Research Center of Soil and Water Conservation and Non-point Source Pollution, Research Center of Landscape Ecology and Human Settlement, Research Center of Red Soil Biogeochemistry, and Research Center of Soil Carbon Sequestration Technology. Also it owns seven technology service centers: Engineering Center of Soil remediation, Engineering Center of Sludge Treatment and Disposal, Environmental Impact Assessment Center, Engineering Center of Land Resources, Engineering Center of Soil and Water Conservation, Information Center of Soil Environmental Resources, and Center of Analysis.

The Institute sponsors the publishing of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, one of the core Chinese journals. The Institute has the following certifications: Environmental Impact Assessment Certification for Construction Projects, Certification of Guangdong Metrological Accreditation, Certification of China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment on Laboratory, Class B Certification of National Soil and Water Conservation and Monitoring, Class B Certification of National Soil and Water Protection Scheme Drafting, Certification of Guangdong Land Planning, and etc. And the Guangdong Soil Society is affiliated to the Institute.
